The primary goals of the Comprehensive Rural Care Collaborative Model are to:
- Provide access to high quality, primary care services in rural community
- Improve preventive health care services
- Retain inpatient services in community
- Create a financially viable health care delivery system.
The development of the integrated Minnie Hamilton Health System was spurred by the closure of Calhoun General Hospital in 1995. Previously operating as a Federally-Qualified Health Center focused on meeting the primary care needs to the community, MHHS expanded its services to absorb the outpatient activity of Calhoun General Hospital and added limited inpatient capacity in order to retain inpatient access in the community. All outpatient services previously offered by both organizations were retained, duplication was eliminated and the strengths of both organizations were utilized.
In 1997, MHHS opened a long-term care unit to further meet the identified needs of the community. In 1999, MHHS expanded to include a primary care center in nearby Glenville, WV that was at risk of closing. In 2002, MHHS received an Expanded Medical Capacity grant to provide access to additional services and outreach in Calhoun and Glenville.
In 2002, MHHS received an Oral Health (New Access) Service Expansion grant to provide access to oral health services for its community health center and school based health clinics located in Calhoun County. At the time, there were no oral health services available in the county. MHHS recruited a dentist and dental hygienist, many local residents received oral health services for the first time in their lives.
And in 2006, MHHS established a Critical Care Transport ambulance service to provide a method of transportation from the facility to a higher level of care when air services are unavailable. This service has assisted other area hospitals transport their critical patients to the appropriate facility.
MHHS has received funding from the federal and West Virginia governments, as well as funding from private foundations. MHHS pursues grants to help fund focused efforts including employee recruitment, staff training, and the implementation of new technology.
